Upside-Down Apple Pie
Ingredients:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup shortening
- 2-3 tablespoons cold water
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 6 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)
Instructions:
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and shortening. Use a fork or pastry cutter to cut the shortening into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle cold water over the mixture, one tablespoon at a time, and mix until the dough comes together into a ball.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface and transfer it into a 9-inch pie dish. Trim the excess dough and crimp the edges.
- Melt the butter in a saucepan and stir in the brown sugar and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into the pie crust, spreading it evenly.
- Arrange the apple slices on top of the sugar mixture, making sure they are tightly packed. Sprinkle with chopped nuts if desired.
- Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 45 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Let the pie cool for at least 10 minutes before carefully flipping it over onto a serving plate.
- Serve warm and enjoy your delicious Upside-Down Apple Pie!
