New York Style Bagels

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  2. Slowly pour in warm water while stirring with a wooden spoon or dough hook on low speed. Mix until the dough comes together.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.
  5. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces.

  8. Drop the bagels into the boiling water, one or two at a time. Cook for about 1-2 minutes, then flip and cook for another minute.
