  1. In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper.
  2. Add in the diced onion and green pepper, and mix until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and stir until just combined.
  5. In a deep pot, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  6. Using a small ice cream scoop or spoon, carefully drop small spoonfuls of the hush puppy batter into the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding.
  7. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown, flipping occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  8. Remove from the oil and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve hot and enjoy!
