Daal (Lentil Soup)

  1. In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add the lentils. Cook the lentils for about 20 minutes or until they are soft.
  2. In a separate pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  3. Add the chopped onions and cook until they are translucent.
  4. Next, add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the pan. Cook for about 1 minute.
  5. Stir in the turmeric and coriander powder, mixing well with the onions, garlic, and ginger.
  6. Add the diced tomato and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  7. Once the lentils are cooked, add the onion and spice mixture to the pot of lentils.
  8. Season with salt to taste and let the soup simmer for another 10 minutes to allow the flavors to blend together.
  9. Garnish with chopped cilantro before serving.
