Baked Alaska
Ingredients:
- 1 frozen pound cake
- 1 quart ice cream (any flavor)
- 6 egg whites
- 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
- Cut the pound cake into 1/2 inch slices and place on a baking sheet. Toast in the oven for 5 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Take the ice cream out of the freezer and let it soften at room temperature for about 5 minutes.
- Line a 9-inch round baking dish with plastic wrap, leaving enough overhang to cover the top of the ice cream later.
- Scoop the softened ice cream into the lined baking dish and smooth it out into an even layer.
- Cut the toasted pound cake slices into smaller pieces and press them gently into the ice cream, creating a crust.
- Cover the top with the plastic wrap overhang and place in the freezer for at least 2 hours, or until the ice cream is completely firm.
- When ready to serve, preheat the broiler.
- In a medium bowl, beat the egg whites and cream of tartar until frothy.
- Add in the sugar and vanilla extract, and continue to beat until stiff peaks form.
- Remove the Baked Alaska from the freezer and remove the plastic wrap.
